Jornada 680/690 - IrDA with the mobile
"How can I connect to the internet using my mobile phone and my PDA?" is a frequently asked question in different news-groups. Either to read e-mail or news or to surf a little bit.
There exist many good instructions for the common settings, the best is in my opinion the PDA configurator from Vodafone. But You need here, like in the most other instructions, that You have a driver for the infrared-modem of Your mobile phone. But what can You do, if You don't have this driver and can't find it at the internet? The owners of PDA's with WindowsCE 3.0 and higher can be lucky, because they don't need a driver. The owners of older devices can help themselves very easy. A long time ago there exist a page (http://www.mobilenet.de/), showing a detailed "Do-it-Yourself"-instruction. Unfortunately the page was completely redesigned and the instruction get lost.
I'll try to quote again the instructions in the following text.
What do we need?
PDA with WindowsCE (CPU and WindowsCE-version doesn't matter)
mobile phone with IrDA-compatible infrared-interface
registry editor for WindowsCE (e.g. Tascal Regedit)
You need to perform the following steps:
- switch on the PDA, close all runnig programs (if possible)
- start the registry editor
- search for the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/ExtModems
- create a new key (here "SiemensS25Irda")
- open the new key
- create a new string value and name it "FriendlyName"
- the data for the new value is taht, what You'll see in the modem selection list (here "Siemens S25 IrDA Modem")
- create a new string value and neme it "Port"
- put in as data "COM3:". The ":" at the end is very important!!!
- create a new DWORD-value and name it "DeviceType"
- put in as data "1" and choose as base "decimal"
- That was nearly all. If You did it like I did, it should look like here:
- At the end You need to close the registry editor and perform a soft reset (on the Jornada 6x0: press red key beside the "Q")
